Nature Silhouettes

Students pay homage to the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman through nature silhouettes inspired by Ana Mendieta
Inspired by Nature

Walt Whitman said, "I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love, If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles."

As our class sought to understand the relationship between man and nature we looked to produce a work of art that would represent the impact of nature upon man.  Emerson tells us that, "the production of a work of art throws a light upon the mystery of humanity.   A work is an abstract or epitome of the world.  It is a result or expression of nature, in miniature."

Reflecting upon these words, we worked with our Artist in Residence, Celeste Neuhaus, to create nature silhouettes inspired by the performance art of Ana Mendieta and its subsequent documentation.  Our students created their own silhouettes out of natural objects found on the nature trail behind our school.
