The Meaning

We wanted to create a piece that felt like a mix between political posters, graffiti art, comic art, and pop art.  The students who created the piece wanted to create a positive message that could be a commentary on our present times while still taking into account the past.  Thus the phrase was born, "Hope for the future.  Inspiration from the past."  Inspirational historical figures are grouped together in categories that speak to the great types of people who have guided America.

The Process

The concept for this piece was created by students in the American Experience class during the 2016-2017 school year.  It was then designed in collaboration with Carly Di Paolo.  The students broke into groups with each group creating one of the five sections.  Students began by finding images of their figures then taping stencils of these figures down onto canvas.  Spray paint was utilized to bring these stencils to life.
